"I agree that Christians who take college
psych, particularly in secular schools, need
some warnings about issues as well as
possible ridicule for expressing their beliefs
in certain circles. You are wise to undertake
this task so that freshmen are not blindsided."

"It is a relief to find a Christian source to
introduce (our daughter) to Psychology this

you again for helping us find such a good
resource. We have already recommended it
to others, and will continue to do so."

I am up to Chapter 5 in Homeschool Psych,
and so far it is EXCELLENT.  I’m very
impressed.  I am taking a long time to read it
because I’m making all sorts of notes on it.
You have truly created a unique and valuable
resource, and I’m so excited about it!

Psychology has been one subject that has often intimidated homeschooling parents.  Those
who are Christians often are concerned that there is no room for their faith in the study of
psychology. Many of us have worried about what is going to happen to our children when they
go to college and are faced with needing to take a psychology course.  Dr. Tim Rice’s
curriculum HOMESCHOOL PSYCH: Preparing Christian Homeschool Students for
Psychology 101 takes a lot of the worry and confusion out of preparing your student for
College Psychology.

One thing that Christians are often accused of is ignoring accepted research methods and
empirical data.  This curriculum accepts the value of Biblical and supernatural knowledge,
but does not consider empirical research as having no value.  That’s the kind of balance
shown throughout the curriculum.  The author believes a Christian worldview recognizes the
value of “putting ideas to the test”. It is a wonderful balance of the science and the Scriptures.

The curriculum itself is detailed and includes twelve in-depth chapters.  Each chapter
includes assignments that include definitions, writing assignments, researching
assignments with specific websites or topics, and scripture readings.  Dr. Rice does not just
explain things well (always a plus), but he also lets your student do his own research to see
how and why the conclusions mentioned are correct.  The curriculum is PRACTICAL,
covering such topics as Modern Psychology, biological components of psychology, drugs,
personality tests and so very much more.

This is definitely a high school level course. The vocabulary is mature and Dr. Rice wants
your student to see what the world’s view is and what a Christian Worldview is and how they
differ. This requires a level of maturity that many students will not reach until upper high
school levels.

I’m impressed with the program and wish it had been around when my children were
growing up. Without having the tools to know specifically the things they would be taught in
their first psychology class, I was at a disadvantage when the questions started coming up
during that freshman year of college. This curriculum would have equipped both my children
and myself to have an appropriate answer.

There are the hard sciences like chemistry and biology that deal in empirical fact. Things we
can know because they can be proven using the scientific method. Although when we reach
the limit of our ability to conduct experiments, even the hard sciences require us to make our
best guess. Social sciences like sociology and psychology are less amenable to hard and
fast rules, and so are more dependent on assumptions or guesses. This of course makes
them more susceptible to the worldview of the scientist. Dr. Tim Rice has written a primer on
psychology for the Christian homeschool student to prepare them for the college-level
psychology class they are most like to take in the future.

He begins with a definition of psychology as the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of
emotional and mental disorders. How you approach psychology will depend on your
worldview whether you agree with the theory of evolution, what you believe about God and
his relationship to man, and what you believe about the cause and nature of mental illness.
He deals first with worldviews before turning to a presentation of the history of modern
psychology, the major figures, ideas, and movements.

The second section of the book covers the topics typically addressed in a Psychology 101
course. It’s not meant to be a replacement text for that course, but a preparation for it. It
explains the basics and familiarizes the student with terminology without going into the
depth that a college textbook might.

Psychology is a fascinating discipline. Students will learn about the brain, sensation and
perception, how we learn, consciousness and how drugs and stimulants like caffeine affect
it, dreams, language development, personality, and mental illness. Although he covers
these topics briefly, he makes them interesting and weaves a thread of Christian
understanding throughout. This is important since he addresses issues like hypnosis,
dream interpretation, and a variety of mental illnesses and disorders, all of which can be a
minefield amongst Christians. I appreciated that he kept to what he could state with certainty
of Biblical doctrine avoiding interpretational differences. He uses the same tactful voice
throughout as he describes psychology theories based on non-Christian worldviews.

He closes with a chapter on research methods, which is at the heart of understanding how
psychologists and behavioral scientists arrive at their ideas of human behavior today.
Understanding how research is properly conducted is important to analyzing any given study
that purports to prove why people do what they do. Was the study properly designed? Was
the analysis of the study based on all the facts or only the facts that aligned with the
researcher’s goals? This chapter is a great antidote to the “studies say pill” we can swallow
whole without knowing whether it is accurate or deceptive.

Each chapter has assignments and further reading suggestions sprinkled throughout the
text. Often this takes the reader to the Internet for further study. Assignments include writing
definitions of terms, writing essays, reading additional material, and answering questions. A
student workbook, quizzes, and answer key are also available.   http://eclectichomeschool.

Homeschool Psych: Preparing Christian Homeschoolers for Psychology 101 is a
tremendous blessing for homeschoolers heading off to college campuses. The
discussion over the need for Christian Psychologists in a predominantly atheistic field is
very well written and provides good argument for young Christians to follow God into every
area of science, including social sciences. The assigned essays provide great practice for
college entrance exams, even though parents will need to research appropriate grading, it
provides an opportunity to write on solid subject matter. Great information on dreams from
a Christian viewpoint is included. Coverage includes information on alcohol as a
depressant, sedatives, caffeine, cocaine, nicotine, and medicinal stimulants, opiates,
hallucinogens, and marijuana. The text includes an incredible number of websites and
research to delve deeper, and the website includes all the links organized by chapter for
easy verification and updates on changing web addresses. The assigned definitions will
provide a fairly lengthy vocabulary listing by the end of the course, although many of the
definitions had to be found via internet searches rather than our physical dictionaries and
are not included in the reference or close of the book. God and His work as Creator and
ultimate authority in our lives is an underlying part of the entire study. Dr. Rice leads the
reader to a better and more firm understanding that a Christian is fully capable of entering
and working in the field of Psychology with a solid Christian worldview as their foundation.
Christian college students are often required to take a Psychology 101 course in their
freshman year, as teachers we need to be sure our students are prepared for the
coursework with a Christian understanding of its place in Godly science. I believe
Homeschool Psych: Preparing Christian Homeschoolers for Psychology 101 will bring
more young Christian students into the field of Psychology successfully at the start of
college coursework, taking the field of Psychology back for the cause of Christ.

Dr. Tim Rice has provided a much needed course for college bound home schoolers to be
better prepared for college coursework and the worldviews they will confront there.
Psychology has fallen away in the world of science for many Christians as a forgotten field,
or one thought about in a much less than favorable light. Homeschool Psych: Preparing
Christian Homeschoolers for Psychology 101 will educate Christians thoroughly and better
prepare families to discuss the deeper subject matter of science and Christianity in
relation to worldviews. I wish I had been prepared before going off to college years ago as
a student from the public school system for the many confrontations to my Christian belief
system. Homeschool Psych will aid your student in thinking from a solid Christian
worldview in subjects far beyond Psychology, which makes this course an incredibly
minimal financial investment for a tremendously large contribution to their faith. God
created our minds with brilliant capacity, understanding the questions introduced by
atheists, humanists, and their theories alongside the Bible and the saving knowledge of
Jesus Christ will strengthen your high schooler in ways you cannot imagine. The
occasional typos will not cover the strength of the message within the pages of
Homeschool Psych: Preparing Christian Homeschoolers for Psychology 101, there is
much more to be gained within these pages. My daughter was having eye opening
moments after studying this material, better understanding how the fall in the garden and
our sinful nature has influenced our mentality and everything about the world of psychology
has prepared her for college and raising and teaching her own children better than I could
have dreamed. The discussions drawn out from Homeschool Psych and the incredibly
extensive internet resources will save you hours of research time had you attempted to
respond to even a few of the Psychology theories approached in this course. The updated
website with corrected links and the possibility of informational blog entries on the
Homeschool Psych blog (http://homeschoolpsych.blogspot.com) will provide additional
information over the coming years for upcoming students in your home school. Prepare
your student solidly for a college campus or for teaching their own children a thorough
biblical worldview ready for any science field and every aspect of the world of Psychology by
taking the Homeschool Psych: Preparing Christian Homeschoolers for Psychology 101
course right along with them, you will both grow in knowledge and faith.
